What Is Strikethrough Text?

Strikethrough text is text with a horizontal line drawn through it. In typography and word processing, strikethrough is traditionally used to indicate something has been deleted, corrected, or is no longer relevant — while still keeping the original text visible. In digital communication, strikethrough has taken on additional creative uses: humor, irony, censorship, and aesthetic styling.

How Unicode Strikethrough Works

Our strikethrough generator uses a Unicode combining character called "Combining Long Stroke Overlay" (U+0336). This character doesn't appear on its own — instead, it modifies the character that precedes it by drawing a horizontal line through it. Our generator inserts this combining character after every non-space character in your text, producing the strikethrough effect.

Because this uses standard Unicode, the strikethrough text works on virtually every platform that supports Unicode — Instagram, Twitter, Discord, Facebook, WhatsApp, and more. The text remains technically the same characters, just with strikethrough overlays.

Creative Uses for Strikethrough Text

Self-correction humor — "I'm definitely going to bed early tonight" — implying you don't actually believe what you just wrote. This is one of the most popular uses in casual text and social media.

Showing edits or changes — useful when explaining a change of plans without erasing the original context. "Meeting at 3pm 4pm" tells the reader both the original and new time.

Censorship effect — striking through words you don't want to fully say but want to imply. Common in humorous posts where the "censored" word is the actual joke.

Aesthetic styling — strikethrough text has a distinctive visual quality that some creators use simply for decoration in bios and captions, particularly in alternative, punk, or grunge-aesthetic profiles.

Strikethrough on Different Platforms

Instagram bios and captions fully support Unicode strikethrough. Twitter/X supports it in tweets and bios. Discord supports it via Unicode AND has its own markdown shortcut (wrapping text in ~~tildes~~) — both work, but the Unicode version works in usernames and server names where markdown doesn't. WhatsApp has native strikethrough via tildes too, but Unicode also works. Facebook supports Unicode strikethrough in posts.

When NOT to Use Strikethrough

Avoid strikethrough in long-form content where readability matters — it's significantly harder to read than plain text. Don't use it in professional or formal communications unless you're specifically indicating an edit or correction. Be aware that screen readers may not announce strikethrough, so users with visual impairments may miss the intended meaning of struck-through text.
